Every day at calendar time we add something to our count up to 1,000. The hundreds chart we add a card (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, etc) and then count them out loud. For the place value chart we add a base ten stick and when we get 10 sticks we regroup for a hundred. When we collect 10 hundreds then we regroup for a thousand cube. With money we add a dime each day, and regroup to a dollar or a ten dollar bill when needed.
In first grade we made a necklace with 100 pony beads. Now in second grade a necklace didn't seem plausible, so I came up with what one kid called the Avatar tail. It has ten strings and each string has 10 tens on it, with each ten being a different color. A few students make the same 10 patterns on each string, other students vary their tens group. When it is all finished there would be 100 tens or 10 hundreds. I love dinosaurs and my classroom theme is dinosaurs so we always attach a dinosaur label.
In first grade it was easy to find songs related to 100 off the internet or blogspots. This year I came up with six songs about one thousand. Here they are (it might be helpful for you to know it was midnight or later when I was writing these songs):

The fake money was a replica of $100 bills that the students had to earn. I received it from DirecTv and I modified it to have the Wrangler seal on it and I signed it like the Treasurer. I have Lunch Bunch every Friday that kids are drawn like a lottery winner. Since 100th Day of School was on Friday I changed the entrance fee. The students had two weeks to earn ten $100 bills to come to Lunch Bunch. They really like eating lunch in the classroom because they won't let me forget to give them their $100 bill when assignment has been completed.
Along with individual students earning $100 bills, the class is earning $100 bills. When, or if, we earn ten $100 bills as a class we will have a party on the 100th Day of School. I was thinking and I am planning on 1,000 Olympics. I am thinking of measuring out different 1,000 things (inches, feet, centimeers, meters, ounces) and have races or tosses. There is some snow out on the school playground so I thought for 1,000 inches we could: toss a snowball, sled race, scooter race, marshmallow blow, crab walk, and egg run. We were going to have a measuring section, money section, and a weighing event.
Since we were counting by 10s I thought of finding things that comes in groups of 10. The internet had started a great list and i kept finding some more. Here is the final list we read together as a class:

In first grade I tried to have a snack that was a shape of a zero, or could make 100 (like a banana, a donut, and a cupcake). I could do the same thing. Donuts are easy and look most like a zero and the donettes size would be perfect. It will be a hectic day, but hopefully one that students will remember.
