I love the 100th Day of School!! It is ten days more than half way through the year. It is something we have been working towards since the first day of school. In first grade we were recognizing numbers to 100. In second grade the Utah State math curriculum has students recognizing numbers up to 1,000. One way to cover the hundreds up to one thousand is by counting by tens. There are different ways to count up to one thousand: there are base ten blocks and a place value chart, a one hundred chart, and money.
Every day at calendar time we add something to our count up to 1,000. The hundreds chart we add a card (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, etc) and then count them out loud. For the place value chart we add a base ten stick and when we get 10 sticks we regroup for a hundred. When we collect 10 hundreds then we regroup for a thousand cube. With money we add a dime each day, and regroup to a dollar or a ten dollar bill when needed.
In first grade we made a necklace with 100 pony beads. Now in second grade a necklace didn't seem plausible, so I came up with what one kid called the Avatar tail. It has ten strings and each string has 10 tens on it, with each ten being a different color. A few students make the same 10 patterns on each string, other students vary their tens group. When it is all finished there would be 100 tens or 10 hundreds. I love dinosaurs and my classroom theme is dinosaurs so we always attach a dinosaur label.
In first grade it was easy to find songs related to 100 off the internet or blogspots. This year I came up with six songs about one thousand. Here they are (it might be helpful for you to know it was midnight or later when I was writing these songs):
1,000 (One Thousand) {tune: He’s a Jolly Good Fellow}
One thousand has three zeroes
One thousand has three zeroes
One thousand has three zeroes
That makes it a big number.
100 Tens (tune: How much is that doggy in the window?)
100 tens are a thousand.
10 hundreds are one too!
100 tens are a thousand.
10 hundreds are one too!
3 Zeroes (tune: Row, row, row, your boat)
Zero, zero, ze—ro,
One thousand has 3 zeroes!
One zero zero zero
One thousand has 3 zeroes.
How many 10s? (tune: Do you know the muffin man?)
How many tens in a thousand, in a thousand, in a thousand?
How many tens in a thousand?
There are 100 tens.
Counting to 1,000 (tune: Twinkle, twinkle little star)
Counting, counting to one thousand
Counting by 100s is much faster
Counting by tens is 100 numbers
Counting by 100s is only ten
Counting, counting to one thousand,
Please don’t make me count again!
Add a zero (tune: Oh my darlin’ Clementine)
Add a zero, add a zero, add a zero to 100
Adding zero to 100 makes 1,000 don’t you know?
I came up with a treat bag too. When I was in first grade the gift bag had these in it:
100 Days of School!!
100 words (and more) to read (book)
100 notes to write (post-its)
100 bubbles to blow (gum)
100 stickers to show (activity book)
100 things when we share (balloons)
100 flights to spare! (Zero the Hero, sock puppet)
Happy 100 Days of School!
This year I came up with this:
Happy 100 Days of School!!
1,000 words (and more) to read (book)
1,000 notes to write (pen)
1,000 bubbles to blow (gum)
100 tens in beads to show (Avatar tail)
1,000 things when we share (post-its)
$1,000 to show I care! (fake money)
The fake money was a replica of $100 bills that the students had to earn. I received it from DirecTv and I modified it to have the Wrangler seal on it and I signed it like the Treasurer. I have Lunch Bunch every Friday that kids are drawn like a lottery winner. Since 100th Day of School was on Friday I changed the entrance fee. The students had two weeks to earn ten $100 bills to come to Lunch Bunch. They really like eating lunch in the classroom because they won't let me forget to give them their $100 bill when assignment has been completed.
Along with individual students earning $100 bills, the class is earning $100 bills. When, or if, we earn ten $100 bills as a class we will have a party on the 100th Day of School. I was thinking and I am planning on 1,000 Olympics. I am thinking of measuring out different 1,000 things (inches, feet, centimeers, meters, ounces) and have races or tosses. There is some snow out on the school playground so I thought for 1,000 inches we could: toss a snowball, sled race, scooter race, marshmallow blow, crab walk, and egg run. We were going to have a measuring section, money section, and a weighing event.
Since we were counting by 10s I thought of finding things that comes in groups of 10. The internet had started a great list and i kept finding some more. Here is the final list we read together as a class:
What things come in groups of 10? Answer:
Ten fingers
Ten toes
Ten Commandments
Ten Plagues inflicted on Egypt (Exodus 7-12)
Ten digits in a telephone number (435-654-0472)

Ten 10s in 100
Ten 100s in 1,000
In first grade I tried to have a snack that was a shape of a zero, or could make 100 (like a banana, a donut, and a cupcake). I could do the same thing. Donuts are easy and look most like a zero and the donettes size would be perfect. It will be a hectic day, but hopefully one that students will remember.
Just two more days!!

Reading is Awesome! Second Grade Program
The second grade classes had the program over a week ago. And boy am I glad it went off so well. Rehearsals are always a bear, and we wonder if it will ever come together. This year we had the challenge of Student Evaluation Plans (SEP) Conferences the same week, along with the Scholastic Book Fair which coincides with SEP Conferences. It was also a three day school week, so only two days to rehearse and one day for performances. This year there were some great costumes.
One picture is from last year and the other is from this year. The students choose a storybook character they would like to dress up as. Some of my favorites have been: Captain Underpants, Nancy Drew, SkippyJon Jones, Santa from Stanley's Christmas Adventure, Marley the dog, Harry Potter, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
The songs we sing are Row, row, row your boat; Yankee Doodle Dandy; The Muffin Man; Oh Where has my Little Dog Gone; and You're a Grand Old Flag. The words have been changed in each song to relate to different literacy lessons we have been teaching in second grade like: consonants, compound words, contractions, seasons, and homophones. For the last two years (since I have been teaching second grade) I have been the pianist for the program. It has been fun to have different students come up and tell me how wonderfully I play the piano.
I love programs, and I love when the programs are over. I also prefer programs that only take a week of rehearsals and not having to worry about costumes.

Twelve Days of Christmas 2011
One of my favorite things this last Christmas was my present. I have desired one of these for several years now and I finally broke down and went for it. Of course, like most of the things I do, I researched for about six months on denim/jean quilts. I didn't want to hunt down old jeans and then cut all the pieces out myself and luckily I found an Etsy account that gave me enough squares for this project. So here are two patterns that I liked.
The former picture was my preferred choice. After sitting on the squares for two months the second day of Christmas Break I leaped into my project. By the end of that day I had all the inner squares pieced, ironed, and sewn. I was soo excited! That's when I had to take a break for the holiday. Having used all the pre-cut squares I needed to figure out how to make the edging squares. I remembered a stash of denim at school and a pair of worn out jeans in the closet. I did have to do some cutting, but it was a thrill to trim down those denim pieces for my this project. (I have to admit that those denim colors are my favorite shades.) So the project so far looks like this:
At first when I received the pre-cut squares I was a little disappointed that some pieces had seams right through the middle of them. I would have liked some pockets, but those were also cut weirdly, right through the middle of the pocket. But now I just love it. Even with the outer squares I took my favorite pockets and seams and went to town. Right now it is sitting on my dining chair waiting patiently for me to find someone to do the quilt stitching. Then I can do the binding and put it on my bed where it rightfully belongs!
